It’s time to bust out the fishnets.
On Sept. 25, Cinecenta is once again presenting The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Theatre manager Michael Ryan says the screening is always a highlight of the year.
“This is as close as you get to interactive film,” said Ryan. “It really relies on audience participation. Every time you see it, it’s different depending on who you watch it with.”
First released in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has enjoyed the longest-running theatrical release in history. Initially a box office dud, the movie became the first bonafide cult classic and has been enjoying midnight screenings for over three decades.
“It’s all booked up on Halloween. Every year we try to get it, but they save it for more commercial theatres,” said Ryan.
Regardless, he believes the late September showing is a great way to kick off the year and raise awareness of Cinecenta.
Audience members have been known to arrive at the theatre spray-painted gold, wearing only a Speedo or dressed in flashy, dangerously revealing clothing.
“Someone usually takes it upon themselves to lead the crowd,” said Ryan. “I mean, half the action is in the audience. It’s barely about what’s actually going on on-screen.”
Ryan saw Rocky Horror for the first time at Cinecenta years ago, and walked out with a giant lipstick “V” scrawled on his forehead. (For those who have yet to see the movie, the “V” stands for virgin).
He has now seen it four or five times.
“The staff love it because they can stock up on toilet paper for the year,” said Ryan, who says the clean up after the show can be quite the endeavor.
“That’s the only headache. You’ve got soggy bread, rice; it gets kind of nasty,” he said. “Every now and then you’ll walk out with an awesome little water pistol, though.”
